8. home to wildlife species year-round

Seabrook Island is home to multiple wildlife species year-round! If you visit one of our ponds or lagoons you’re likely to find American alligators, bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, and painted buntings! Inland toward the maritime forest, you’ll find white-tailed deer, piebald deer, bobcats, foxes, and even coyotes.

Our local aquatic wildlife is the most popular amongst visitors though! Our native bottlenosed dolphins are often seen strand feeding on Captain Sams Inlet, where you can watch them from North Beach during low tide. The Island is also home to loggerhead sea turtles who nest along the beautiful beaches.

9. rich history began with coastal Indians

All the way back in 1400 BC, the Island was inhabited by coastal Indians – the Kiawah, Stono, and Bohicket tribes. In 1666, Colonel Robert Sanford arrived on the island to explore on behalf of Britain’s King Charles II. By 1684, the Stono Indians were persuaded to surrender the land to the Lords Proprietors, who eventually sold it to English settlers.

By 1732, the Island had its first name Jones Island after the first owner, Thomas Samuel Jones. In 1753, the Island’s name changed to Simmons Island after the new owner, Ebenezer Simmons. Then by 1816, the Island was renamed to what we now know as Seabrook Island, after the owner William Seabrook.

From 1816 through 1970, the Island’s ownership continued to change but the name Seabrook Island has stuck around since 1816. In 1970, the Island started to become what we now recognize. The Seabrook Island Development Corporation began extensive planning for a community that would combine residential and resort living in a secure, gated community.

Local Lowcountry Oyster Roast Events 2024

Thanks to a prime location along the lush South Carolina coastline, oysters can be enjoyed year-round on Seabrook Island. The freshly harvested Lowcountry oysters are particularly flavorful and best served in the colder months, or as legend says in the months ending in the letter “R.”

Oysters may be an acquired taste, but they are a luxurious Lowcountry delicacy that appeal to many diners whether slurped raw, grilled, steamed, or roasted. The long-standing, Lowcountry tradition of oyster roasts dates back to the 1800s when notable fishermen held grand open-air cookouts celebrating the fresh oyster harvest, a well-loved tradition still celebrated on the islands today.  Check out our list of our favorite local oyster events for 2023 & 2024.
