Best Spots to Catch a Sunset or Sunrise
Captain Sam’s Creek is the most wonderful spot to sit back, relax, and watch the sunset from a sandy inlet located between Kiawah and Seabrook Island. The sandy bank is known as a hotspot for dolphin watching as they feed and watching the sunset.
Bohicket Marina offers the perfect spot to drop your kayak and head into the hidden creeks and channels of Bohicket Creek for a stunning sunset. When you’re done, you can come back to land and enjoy a bite to eat or delicious ice cream!
Must-Taste Dishes
With such a wide variety of delicious Lowcountry cuisine, it can be difficult to decide which dish you must try. But don’t worry, we have had plenty of time living here to put together our favorite meals for you to try.
For classic French cuisine in a casual, inviting atmosphere, visit Hege’s to try their infamous Gullah Shrimp, Almond Crusted Tuna, or Chicken Cassoulet for fresh, seasonal, local dishes prepared in light, natural sauces.
Although most famous for their 48 exceptional wines, FortyEight offers a decadent Sesame Marinated Swordfish for a one-of-a-kind dinner that will make your Kiawah Island vacation unforgettable.
For the best to-go food, locally sourced with an ever-changing assortment of salads, sandwiches, cheese and charcuterie boards, takeaway meals, drinks and more, visit Café Eugenia to try their specialty Charcuterie Sandwich.
Ditch the Car, Walk or Bike the Trails!
One of the best ways to explore the island is by walking or biking the trails. Ditch the car, grab your bike or walking shoes, and hit the trails for a one-of-a-kind adventure. On Seabrook Island, you can walk between neighborhoods, to the beach, through shopping centers, and more!
Bike through the beach for stunning water views, cool breezes, and white sandy trails. Ride through Freshfields Village for an exhilarating ride through an open-air shopping center with shopping and dining along the way. Or head to Bohicket Marina for an adventure on the water with shopping, dining, and fun water rentals along the way.
Look for Wildlife
The island is teeming with wildlife from alligators hiding in the ponds to pelicans soaring over the waves, everywhere you look is an opportunity for wildlife viewing.
The beach is easily the most popular exploration spot– and for good reason! With plenty of viewing spots from your towel on the sand, your bike on the shores, or your kayak in the water, watch for dolphins, starfish, pelicans, sand dollars, jellyfish, crabs, and more.
Get Out on the Water
Ditch the car, bike, and walking shoes for an even better adventure– one on the waterways! Whether by kayak, paddleboard, private boat, or fishing charter, there are endless opportunities to explore the water on Seabrook Island.
Rent kayaks, paddleboards, skimboards, and more for the adventure of a lifetime with the whole family. Looking for more of a guided tour with a fishing guide or wildlife expert? You’re in luck! Ready to explore the wonders of nature in South Carolina? Nestled in the charming and historic city of Charleston, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) stands as a celebration of the beauty and diversity of the region’s natural world. This annual event brings together nature enthusiasts, wildlife artists, and conservationists to showcase the rich tapestry of Southeastern wildlife. Join us on a virtual journey as we explore the magic of SEWE and the captivating experiences it offers.
DATE: Friday, February 16 – Sunday, February 18, 2024
What Is It?
Wildlife and nature lovers can experience the largest wildlife and sporting event in the nation at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE). This three-day annual event takes place on President’s Day weekend at five separate venues in Charleston – Charleston Place Fine Art Gallery, Gaillard Center, Marion Square, Charleston Marriott, and beautiful Brittlebank Park on the banks of the Ashley RIver. SEWE offers a true taste of the Lowcountry – fine art exhibits by wildlife painters and sculptors, conservation education programs, live demonstrations, and Lowcountry socials with oysters, bbq, and bluegrass to dust off your dancing boots!
SEWE is a family friendly event with unlimited entertainment for the kids! The Brittlebank Park venue has a “Kids Zone” with an exotic petting zoo, hands-on activities, fun games, educational programs, and pony and camel rides for the kids. The Marion Square venue has a smaller kids section with hands-on activities, Birds of Prey flight demonstrations, and presentations by the Dolphin Doctor. Accompanying adults do not need a ticket for Marion Square. For pet parents, please note that leashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome at all outdoor venues, but not on the SEWE shuttles.
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of nature’s beauty and a call to action for conservation. Whether you’re an art aficionado, a wildlife enthusiast, or someone looking to connect with the great outdoors, SEWE offers a unique and immersive experience. So, mark your calendar for next February and embark on a journey to discover the treasures of the Southeastern wildlife in the heart of charming Charleston.
Why Charleston?
Charleston, with its cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and rich cultural heritage, provides a picturesque backdrop for SEWE. The event usually takes place in February, making it an ideal time to explore the city’s historic charm while immersing oneself in the wonders of nature.
What To Do?
Wildlife Art: SEWE is renowned for its impressive display of wildlife art from talented artists across the country. From intricately detailed sculptures to vibrant paintings, the event transforms Charleston into a gallery showcasing the beauty of the Southeast’s diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can expect to encounter pieces that not only capture the essence of wildlife but also highlight the importance of conservation.
Birds of Prey Demonstrations: One of the most thrilling aspects of SEWE is the Birds of Prey demonstrations. Expert falconers and handlers showcase the incredible skills of these majestic birds, offering an up-close and personal experience. Witnessing the agility and grace of raptors like eagles, hawks, and owls is an unforgettable experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for these magnificent creatures.
DockDogs Competition: For a dose of excitement, SEWE features the DockDogs competition, where dogs showcase their jumping and retrieving skills in water. Enthusiastic canine athletes leap off docks into a large pool, demonstrating their athleticism and love for the water. It’s a family-friendly event that adds a playful element to the wildlife exposition.
Conservation Education: SEWE is not just about entertainment; it also serves as an educational platform for wildlife conservation. Visitors can engage with experts and organizations dedicated to preserving the Southeast’s natural habitats. Workshops, lectures, and interactive exhibits provide valuable insights into the importance of protecting the region’s biodiversity.
Outdoor Lifestyle Exhibits: Explore the outdoor lifestyle of the Southeast through exhibits featuring hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. From gear demonstrations to discussions on sustainable practices, these exhibits offer a comprehensive look at the region’s outdoor traditions.
VIP Packages include entry to all venues, live shows, and exhibits, as well as exclusive perks and insider access to immersive experiences. A limited number of VIP packages are available ranging from $300 to $6,000.
There are several public parking garages in downtown Charleston and a complimentary SEWE shuttle service between all SEWE venues. With the exception of the Charleston Marriott and Brittlebank Park venues, you can easily walk between exhibits and soak up the Lowcountry charm of Charleston. Visit the SEWE website for shuttle information. For transportation from Seabrook Island & Kiawah Island, Island Transportation offers black car service to special events in and around Charleston – simply book online!

The private community of Seabrook Island is known for its serene, secluded Atlantic beaches, lush Lowcountry landscapes, and a natural unspoiled beauty and charm that has sustainably stood the test of time. The destination itself sets the tone for nature inspired activities, eco-friendly tee times, leisurely bike rides along quiet streets lined with moss-draped live oaks, and relaxing outdoor exploration on the scenic trails that wind around the island’s tiny 2,200 acres.
However you choose to explore the trails – by bike, by horse, by paddleboat, or on foot – you’ll find it here on Seabrook Island. The Seabrook Island Equestrian Center has dedicated equestrian trails for horse riding, endless bike paths connect the activities and amenities on the island, and there are beautifully maintained walking trails for a peaceful stroll in nature.
The nature trails on Seabrook Island do not allow dogs, but with 3.5 miles of uncrowded, pet-friendly beaches and a wide selection of vacation homes that welcome your pup, Fido has plenty of space to sniff, smell, and swim along the shoreline of Seabrook Island.
Trailhead:Hidden Oak Drive Level: Beginner-Intermediate Distance: ½ mile
The Hidden Oak Nature Trail near Pelican Beach is the most popular nature trail on the island and our favorite place to birdwatch in Seabrook. The half-mile trail parallels Hidden Oak Drive and is relatively easy, aside from two sets of wooden steps on the steeper sections of the trail.
From the trail parking, you’ll wander through woods with wildlife, around a lagoon with a resident alligator, and on to a beautiful live oak fondly known as The Kissing Tree (take a peek at the backside of the tree for a mouth-like shape). From here, you can either walk back through the woods or along Hidden Oak Drive.
The Old Drake Nature Trail is a short out-and-back trail from the pump station on Old Drake Drive to the trails at the Seabrook Island Equestrian Center. The T-shaped path winds through lush Loblolly pines around the tranquil marshlands with benches to take in the sights and sounds of nature’s beautiful birdlife and wildlife. The end of the trail meets a clearly marked private property on the left and the equestrian trails on the right for horse riders only.
The Bobcat Dune Nature Walk is a short beachside boardwalk from the SIPOA Community Center through the dunes and marshlands on Seabrook Island North Beach. Bobcat Dune Nature Walk is perfect for an easy, sunny, oceanfront stroll! The ½ mile trail is entirely boardwalk with sweet grass and sea oats, colorful birdlife, and scenic ocean views. The boardwalk continues to meet the more difficult Six Ladies Trail or head back the way you came. The beaches of Seabrook Island are a nesting site for Loggerhead sea turtles, please stay on the boardwalk and away from the dunes.
The Six Ladies Nature Trail begins at the parking area off Oyster Catcher Court or can be joined from the Bobcat Dune Nature Walk. The trail is only 1/3 of a mile, but it’s the most rugged of them all, traversing through the maritime forest and old dunes formed when the ocean covered more of the island. The trail climbs to a lookout over Cap’n Sams Creek with a bench and picnic table to pause and soak up the views. Keep your eyes peeled for birdlife, our local otters, and the bucket-list opportunity to witness dolphins strand feeding in Cap’n Sams Creek. After the overlook, the trail becomes more difficult over the old dunes into a palmetto forest and climbing up to Oyster Catcher Court.
Bordered by the North Edisto River and Privateer Creek, Camp St. Christopher protects over 300 acres of undisturbed maritime forest and more than a mile of beachfront with several nature trails winding from the Welcome Center through the preserve. There are three easy trails open to the public from sunrise to sunset, however, reservations must be made one to two days in advance by calling (843)-768-0429.
The Lake House is a fitness and wellness facility and the hub of the local Seabrook Island community. The state-of-the-art facility includes an indoor pool and fitness center, an outdoor pool and playground, and two tranquil trails for a nature walk. The Lake House Nature Trail is past the playground and crosses a bridge into a wooded trail through the maritime forest to join the bike path on Seabrook Island Road. A path leads off the Lake House Nature Trail for a scenic stroll around Palmetto Lake.
For a unique and memorable way to explore Seabrook Island, check out the award-winning Equestrian Center, one of the few destinations on the east coast you can book a beach horse ride! Aside from bucket-list beach rides, you can book private or group lessons, and trail rides on dedicated equestrian trails through the woods, marshlands, and tidal creeks on Seabrook Island.
Beach & Trail Rides: Walking Beach Rides | Ages 12 and older | Starting at $135 per person Scenic Trail Rides | Ages 8 and older | Starting at $63 per person Pony Rides | Ages 7 and younger | Starting at $40 per pony
Exploring Seabrook Island by bike is a peaceful nature experience in itself! The low-speed limit makes it a safe and fun way for families to venture between the beach pools, golf courses, crabbing docks, Equestrian Center, and the nature trails on the island. The bike path continues past the main gate to Bohicket Marina and open-air shopping, dining, and events at Freshfields Village. Check out our Guide to Biking Around Seabrook Island highlighting the recommended bike routes and you’ll receive discounted deals for the whole family from Surfscooter Bike Rentals when you stay with Seabrook Exclusives.
Neighboring Kiawah Island is equally as appealing as a nature destination with 30+ miles of bike paths connecting to Seabrook Island, 10 miles of award-winning beaches for shoreline strolls or bike rides, and a network of nature trails and guided naturalist walks at Night Heron Park. For a nature-inspired vacation in paradise, the beautiful barrier islands of South Carolina are unbeatable.

Captain Sam’s Inlet at North Beach separates the barrier islands of Kiawah and Seabrook and is one of only a few destinations in the world where dolphin lovers can experience the rare phenomenon of dolphins strand feeding. Seabrook Island’s 2,200 acres stand as a reminder of the pleasures of a slower pace of life. Residents and guests alike have enjoyed the best of life among the most peaceful of settings in this private island paradise with 3.5 miles of pristine beaches, maritime forest, and marshes!
Seabrook Island is Charleston, South Carolina’s only truly private oceanfront community with resort access. A secluded barrier island with all the comforts of home and all the luxuries of a resort vacation, Seabrook Island offers peaceful surroundings for beach-goers in a quiet residential community.
8. home to wildlife species year-round
Seabrook Island is home to multiple wildlife species year-round! If you visit one of our ponds or lagoons you’re likely to find American alligators, bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, and painted buntings! Inland toward the maritime forest, you’ll find white-tailed deer, piebald deer, bobcats, foxes, and even coyotes.
Our local aquatic wildlife is the most popular amongst visitors though! Our native bottlenosed dolphins are often seen strand feeding on Captain Sams Inlet, where you can watch them from North Beach during low tide. The Island is also home to loggerhead sea turtles who nest along the beautiful beaches.
9. rich history began with coastal Indians
All the way back in 1400 BC, the Island was inhabited by coastal Indians – the Kiawah, Stono, and Bohicket tribes. In 1666, Colonel Robert Sanford arrived on the island to explore on behalf of Britain’s King Charles II. By 1684, the Stono Indians were persuaded to surrender the land to the Lords Proprietors, who eventually sold it to English settlers.
By 1732, the Island had its first name Jones Island after the first owner, Thomas Samuel Jones. In 1753, the Island’s name changed to Simmons Island after the new owner, Ebenezer Simmons. Then by 1816, the Island was renamed to what we now know as Seabrook Island, after the owner William Seabrook.
From 1816 through 1970, the Island’s ownership continued to change but the name Seabrook Island has stuck around since 1816. In 1970, the Island started to become what we now recognize. The Seabrook Island Development Corporation began extensive planning for a community that would combine residential and resort living in a secure, gated community.
