How To Paddle Seabrook Island’s Lowcountry Waterways

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, North Edisto River, Bohicket Creek, and the Kiawah River (aka Dolphin Highway), Seabrook Island is the perfect destination for paddlers seeking a peaceful paddle or an exciting river adventure in South Carolina’s scenic Lowcountry.

Seabrook Island is home to some of the most unspoiled natural beauty in the Lowcountry region. On Seabrook Island, you’ll be sharing the waterways with playful and curious bottlenose dolphins and an abundance of saltwater and freshwater fish species. Our local wildlife freely roams the marshlands and maritime forests that line the river banks while bald eagles, ospreys, and blue herons soar above waiting to strike and spear a fish. Paddling Seabrook Island’s wild and scenic waterways is a unique experience for paddlers of all skill levels.

Whether you’re a family of first-time paddlers or a team of adventure kayakers exploring new waters, we’ve got you covered on kayak and paddleboard rentals on Seabrook Island, where to launch for a solo adventure, and recommendations for guided Seabrook Island paddle tours to experience the thrill of paddling through the most unspoiled natural beauty in the Lowcountry.

From 1816 through 1970, the Island’s ownership continued to change but the name Seabrook Island has stuck around since 1816. In 1970, the Island started to become what we now recognize. The Best Beaches On Seabrook Island

Tucked on 2,200 acres in the South Carolina Lowcountry within driving distance of the charming city of Charleston, Seabrook Island is a luxurious destination for a quintessential island beach escape. You can be sipping tropical cocktails, savoring succulent seafood and sunsets, and switching to island time on a secluded beach with ease (and without a passport!) when you visit Seabrook Island.

Seabrook Island is known for its natural Lowcountry beauty, relaxing atmosphere, luxurious resort amenities, and 3.5 miles of uninterrupted, secluded, and serene white sand Atlantic beaches. Our quiet and beautiful beaches are the island’s main attraction – open only to residents and guests, free from crowds of tourists and commercialism, pet-friendly year-round, and pristinely preserved as a critical habitat to protect the island’s local wildlife.

Whether you’re seeking outdoor exploration or a slower pace of life for some much-needed R&R with sunny skies and sand between your toes, South Carolina’s Seabrook Island is paradise on earth for beach lovers and, of course, relaxing is always better at the beach!

Aside from quality family time and lots of R&R, Pelican Beach is a prime spot for surf fishing, dolphin watching, wildlife viewing, beach bike rides, and the most spectacular sunsets on Seabrook Island. Handicap beach access is available at Boardwalk #9 at Pelican Watch Villas

2. North Beach

Situated on the eastern shore of Seabrook Island, North Beach boasts one of the widest beach fronts in coastal Carolina and possibly the wildest, most natural, and secluded too! North Beach is the first spot the sun touches on Seabrook Island for picture-perfect sunrises and is a haven for nature-loving beach-goers.

Between sunbathing and relaxing, take a stroll or beach bike ride to Captain Sams Inlet to witness our resident dolphin pod strand feeding from the shoreline, watch the seasonal sea turtle hatchlings making tracks to the ocean, or saddle up for a horseback beach ride with the Seabrook Island Equestrian Center. Handicap beach access and beach wheelchairs are available at Boardwalk #1 at the Oyster Catcher Community Center.

Beach Rules for Pets: North Beach is another favorite with pet parents! There is a large, designated off-leash area however from the beach boardwalk at the Oyster Catcher Community Center north to Captain Sams Inlet is a Restricted Zone to protect our wildlife – your pets are not permitted on the beach at any time, on or off leash.

3. Seabrook Island Beach Club

Local Lowcountry Oyster Roast Events 2024

Thanks to a prime location along the lush South Carolina coastline, oysters can be enjoyed year-round on Seabrook Island. The freshly harvested Lowcountry oysters are particularly flavorful and best served in the colder months, or as legend says in the months ending in the letter “R.”

Oysters may be an acquired taste, but they are a luxurious Lowcountry delicacy that appeal to many diners whether slurped raw, grilled, steamed, or roasted. The long-standing, Lowcountry tradition of oyster roasts dates back to the 1800s when notable fishermen held grand open-air cookouts celebrating the fresh oyster harvest, a well-loved tradition still celebrated on the islands today.  Check out our list of our favorite local oyster events for 2023 & 2024.

Seabrook Island Artist Guild

Located only 30 minutes from historic Charleston, the private community of Seabrook Island is an inspiring destination for nature lovers, novelists, and a creative community of 100+ local talented artists. Surrounded by tranquil views of the Atlantic Ocean, serene Lowcountry waterways, and sunny South Carolina skies, the charm and beauty of Seabrook Island attracts and inspires artists to get outside and paint.

The Seabrook Island Artist Guild is a community of 100+ local artists from Seabrook Island, Kiawah Island, Johns Island, and nearby Charleston. Their mission is to stimulate creativity, provide learning opportunities, promote and exhibit local artists, and encourage art within the community. Join us as we explore the creative spirit of Seabrook Island’s local artists.

Bob Lefevre’s love for the water and passion for art inspires his realistic maritime oil paintings of shrimp boats on the creeks, Lowcountry marshlands, ocean waves, and his travels through the ocean ports of Europe. Bob inspires local artists and visitors to the island with private or group art lessons in his Seabrook Island home studio.

Peter Boatti is a long time resident of Seabrook Island, an active member of the guild, and a former art student of Bob LeFevre. While he considers himself more of a hobbyist than an artist, his pencil portraits, wildlife paintings, and Lowcountry landscapes reflect his lifelong love and natural talent for art.

Roberta Boatti’s love for art began at an early age in her mother’s art studio. Her bright and vibrant artwork is inspired by the landscapes of the South Carolina Lowcountry and the rich African American Gullah culture still thriving in the sea islands today.

Inspired by nature, Lauren Smith-Nagel blurs the lines between abstraction and realism in her expressive and colorful abstract landscapes. Her oil and cold wax paintings reflect “loosely assembled” images of the coastal landscapes surrounding her Seabrook Island home and studio.

Pat Van de Graaf is an award-winning printmaker and artist best known for her intricate silk screen and hand tinted etchings. After moving to the Lowcountry, her passion for painting was reignited and she captures the simplistic and unique beauty of nature in her watercolor and oil paintings.

Stemming from a family of sailors and growing up on the water, Rob Bavier paints “the world of water and boats” capturing the changing moods of the sea islands in watercolor, oils and pastels. His paintings have received “Best Watercolor” and “Best in Show” at juried exhibits, and he is the current Vice President of the Seabrook Island Artist Guild.

Gary Kunkelman’s paintings are “inspired by the beauty, energy and traditions of the sea” and a decade of study with maritime painter Jack Coggins. His art accurately depicts moments in maritime history and moments inspired by the waterways and oceans of coastal South Carolina.

Cynthia Reddersen has been creating art and photography since childhood – the seclusion and serenity of Seabrook Island is all the inspiration she needs to be creative. Her artwork ranges from plein air paintings in watercolors and oils to abstract art and impressionist landscapes.

Debbe Falls Finkelstein is an artist inspired by the ocean and loves to explore all skills and methods of creativity. She began her artistic adventure with traditional oil painting and now creates amazing abstract art with acrylics and alcohol inks infused with vibrant colors, textures, and layers of metallic pigments for a unique 3D effect.

During your stay on Seabrook Island, stop by the Patricia Reno Huff Gallery & Art Studio in Freshfields Village. Pat is a local Seabrook Island artist who uses a variety of different oil painting techniques including palette knife and glazing and offers local art workshops at her studio in Freshfields Village.
